The "Barry Zito Four Run Rule"

There is no doubt in my mind that Scott Boras used the following statistic during his Barry Zito negotiations with the Giants: Entering last night's game, Zito was 85-4when his team scored 4 runs or more. Now he's 86-4.

I heard that stat from the Rockies' announcing duo of Drew Goodman and George Frazier (who I can stand about as much as I can stand cutting my head when I shave), so you know it was in Boras's arsenal.

Here's the thing though -- I think GM Brian Sabean should have considered this before convincing himself that the words "Rich Aurilia" and "acceptable #3 hitter" went together like peanut butter and jelly. In other words, your team damn well be able to score 4 runs a game more often than not. Zito's career mark is 103-65, meaning he is only 17-61 when his team scores 3 runs or fewer.

The moral of the story? Score 4 runs for Barry Zito and he won't lose the game for you.

If your team can score 4 runs for this guy, you have yourself an ace

The benefit from last weekend's Pittsburgh vacation is that the Giants could throw their #1 starter last night and their #2 starter, Matt Cain, tonight. Frazier went as far as to say that Cain is not only one of the best young pitchers in baseball, but one of the best pitchers, period, in the game. Might be a bit of a stretch at this point to say he's one of the best pitchers in the game (maybe top-25), but Cain has sure impressed more than one opponent.

One more random note: Glenallen Hill is the first-base coach for the Rockies. Hill, one of the worst Giants hitters of all-time (let's just say he was "impatient" at the plate), looks exactly the same as he did 10 years ago. It's unbelievable. Anyway, the aforementioned Frazier (seriously, I can't stand the guy), said earlier this season that Hill was going to be a tremendous help to the Rockies by providing, among other things, hitting tips. Um... what? Isn't that kind of like sending your son to an STD-prevention class in which Paris Hilton is the facilitator?

Glenallen Hill is to hitting what Paris Hilton is to STD prevention
